Kim’s Convenience has been cancelled with season 5 being its last.
The announcement was made via the Canadian TV sitcom’s social media channels.
Although Kim’s Convenience had been renewed for a sixth season, producer Ins Choi and Kevin White have decided to move on.
“Authenticity of storytelling is at the center of the success of Kim’s Convenience. At the end of production on Season 5, our two co-creators confirmed they were moving on to other projects,” the producers’ statement said.
“Given their departure from the series, we have come to the difficult conclusion that we cannot deliver another season of the same heart and quality that has made the show so special. Kim’s Convenience has meant so much to our cast, writers, crew, and audiences around the world.”
“Despite the restrictions and complications of shooting during the pandemic, Season five is our finest season to date. It’s been a privilege and a very great pleasure to work with the Kim’s family of gifted writers and performers for the last five years. Thank you to our fans for the love and support you’ve given this show.”
The stars of the show responded with sorrow, sharing their responses via social media.
Shang Chi star Simu Liu, who played Jung in the sitcom, expressed how heartbroken he was.
“Disappointing news today,” he tweeted. “I’m heartbroken. I feel like my journey with Jung was cut short. I feel like you, the fans, deserved better. But I’m proud of all that we accomplished together in 5 seasons. Thanks for all your love and support. This isn’t goodbye, only #OKSeeYou.”
Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, who starred as Appa, retweeted Liu’s message, writing “love you son. I was always proud of you.”
He also replied to Andrew Phung’s tweet (who played Kimchi), saying “I have no words for now. Only a profound sense of loss and sadness. Love you, brother.”
Phung had tweeted, “To my fellow costars @bitterasiandude @jean_yoon @SimuLiu @NicolePower3 and Andrea Bang, it was the greatest honour to watch you act, learn from you, and act alongside you. Every day with you with an absolute joy. I’m so proud of everything we created and cherish all moments…”
